Wildlife Research Expedition 2004

For a long time I had planned to do some voluntary work abroad. My love of Africa and wildlife, especially the big cats, made it pretty easy for me to decide what type of work I wanted to do.

I looked at several organisations but the Wildlife Research Expedition from GVI was prefect for what I wanted. It was for ten weeks and the research was mainly on the four focus animals; lions, leopards, cheetahs and wild dogs at the Edeni private game reserve, about 60km west of Kruger National Park. We would monitor their movement, prey selection, kill frequency and interraction with the other animals on the reserve. In addition, there would be special monitoring for things such as matings if and when they occur. As well as the four focus animals we also monitored hyenas, white rhinos and elephants.

Half way through we had a week off and I spent a few days in Kruger National Park. Afterwards, me and a friend travelled by plane, ferry, train and bus from Cape Town through Malawi and Tanzania, finishing with a week in Zanzibar. Photos from this part of the trip are here.
