The day the expedition ended, we flew down to Cape Town where we spent a week. We then hired a car to see the white sharks at Gansbaai and drove back along the coast through Hermanus and some amazing coastal scenery to the Cape Peninsular. We flew back up to Jo'burg and the next morning took the City to City bus, across three borders, all the way to Blantyre in Malawi, a 30 hour journey.

We didn't spend too much time in Malawi, we were restricted because of ferry and train timetables and we wanted to get to Zanzibar for New Years' Eve. The Ilala ferry runs only once a week, as does the express Tazara train from Mbeya in southern Tanzania to Dar. So from Blantyre we went to Cape MaClear for one night then to Nkhata Bay for another two (much better there). Then overland to Mbeya where, after a 25 hour delay, we caught the train to Dar. I'd never been on a train in Africa and it was something I always wanted to do, and it was well worth the wait.

We didn't hang around in Dar, we went straight to Zanzibar. We spent a few days in Stown Town then three days in Nungwe in the north, with visits to Jozani Forest and I also went dolphin watching in the south. Zanzibar was the perfect way to end four tiring weeks of travelling.
