Westman Islands
The Westman Islands, or Vestmannaeyjar, are a cluster of small islands off the south coast of Iceland formed 11,000 years ago.
These photos are from Heimaey, the largest and only inhabited island. It is dominated by two volcanoes. Helgafell was formed 5,000 years ago. In 1973, Eldfell erupted. Many of the homes were buried under the ash and the new lava flow increased the size of the island by 2.5 sq km.
